On our fifth Original Lapland Field trip we went to see some traditional and modern activities in Tornio’s area.  We started the journey from Pello on a misty Tuesday morning 19th February and collected a small bus full of people along the way.

Our first destination was Hovilompolo, located right next to Karunki, on the Kukkola side. They offer a variety of sauna experiences and a lovely place to celebrate family events, evening parties and dining. Host of the place Mr. Esko Kivilompolo, welcomed us in the yard and took us to see the smoke sauna and the hut sauna. After that, we sat down by the fire in an atmospheric hut for coffee. Esko told us about the history of the place and his company. Finally, we also went to see the old manor, where he serves his guests traditional local dishes, such as whitefish. https://www.visitmeri-lappi.fi/fi/hovi/hovi/

Mr. Risto Kantola, the host of the company called Nordic Safaris, was waiting for us next in Siikakartano’s yard, right on the edge of Kukkolankoski rapids. He introduced the company’s activities, which have expanded from snowmobile safari to rafting and accommodation, meeting and restaurant facilities. After the introduction, we went to Kukkolankoski, where Risto Leinonen introduced us to winter fishing. We even got a fish – fine burbot! http://www.nordicsafaris.com/

After outdoor activities, we were already hungry and headed for lunch at Sleep Inn Beauty in Kourilehto. Lasagne was delicious and a lively conversation filled the beautiful dining area. Entrepreneur Tuula Saari told us about the colorful history of the place and her own life, her bold decision to buy that place and start a guesthouse! http://www.sleepinnbeauty.com/

The next stop, Farm Escape, was half an hour away from Sleep Inn Beauty. That’s a farm where you can experience a new activity, escape games. Entrepreneur Liisa Koivisto warmly welcomed us and then led us into the stables where the games are organized. The animals on the farm play an important role in this activity and we got to meet some of these wonderful actors. As we sat by the campfire Liisa told us how she got the idea to start her escape game business. http://www.farmescape.fi/tornio/

A huge thanks to all our lovely hosts! And thanks to all our participants, who happened to be all women this time! We had a great time together and I think we all got a lot of new nice acquaintances.
