Magic of Crossing the Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle runs through the village of Juoksenki, about 30 km south of Pello’s town center. Crossing the Arctic Circle is a memorable milestone and an essential part of any Lapland traveler’s journey.

The Arctic Circle marks the southernmost point where the sun does not rise in winter or set in summer. That means you can truly experience the Midnight Sun just north of Juoksenki in Pello.

Juoksenki is an active village that spans both sides of the Tornio River, with its Swedish sister village on the opposite shore, also called Juoksengi. The villages work closely together:
In winter, an ice road is plowed across the river, allowing travelers to drive from one country to the other, and in summer, the area hosts major cross-border events like the Swim the Arctic Circle – an international open water swimming event that brings hundreds of swimmers from around the world to Juoksenki
