Northern Lights Season is on

Northern Lights

As autumn evenings grow darker, Lapland reveals its most magical natural wonder – the Northern Lights. Often green, sometimes purple or red, these arcs of light dance across the northern sky in a show that is always unique and full of surprises. The Tornio Valley offers magnificent opportunities to experience this northern marvel, also known as Aurora Borealis.

When can you see the Northern Lights?

Many people associate the Aurora Borealis with midwinter and freezing cold nights, but in fact, the season begins already in late August when evenings turn dark, and continues well into spring. In autumn, dark and still lakes reflect the colorful arcs, doubling the spectacle – the sky and earth blend together in a breathtaking display.

The lights are most commonly seen around midnight. Once darkness has fallen, the northern sky may suddenly come alive.

Where can you see the Northern Lights best?

Original Lapland is full of excellent viewing spots. Climb to the top of a fell or hill with open views, such as Aavasaksa Hill, Saana Fell, or the highest point of Eero’s Trail. Large lakes – Ylitornio’s Vietonen and Raanujärvi, or Pello’s Valkeajärvi and Konttajärvi – offer magnificent reflections after nightfall. The border bridges crossing the Tornio River also provide great viewpoints to admire the aurora show.

Remember safety

Always keep safety in mind when chasing the Northern Lights! Park your car only where it won’t disturb other traffic, wear reflectors so you are visible in the dark, and carry a source of light. Never go onto lakes or rivers without a professional guide who knows the area well.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute monitors aurora forecasts. Predictions can be tricky, so the best advice is simple: on any clear night, look up at the northern sky.
