Road trip along the Tornio River
Have you ever thought about the opportunities the banks of the Tornio River offer for a road trip? Our shared Tornio River Valley, following the river between Finland and Sweden, offers plenty to see and many destinations framed by both nature and culture. In the Tornio River Valley, going abroad is also more than easy.
Take a drive with your group from south to north or from north to south – the whole stretch from Tornio to Kilpisjärvi, or just a carefully chosen part of the journey. The two banks of the Tornio River are connected by many bridges at comfortable distances from each other, making it easy to zigzag from Finnish Lapland to Swedish Lapland and back again. Few places in Europe make a cross-border road trip this effortless.
Small and slightly larger villages dot the riverbanks along the entire valley. Exploring them is rewarding: even though we share the same landscape, you notice subtle cultural differences as soon as you cross the border. On the Swedish side, the “eyes” of the houses often have sunshades like lashes, yards are adorned with lively decorations, and the colours chosen for wooden facades tend to be a little bolder than in Finland.
Original Lapland area is also a meeting place of languages. Finnish is spoken on both sides of the river, especially among the older generations. English works well everywhere, and Meänkieli – the local language blending Finnish and Swedish – is a special curiosity that adds its own flavour to the culture of the valley.
Even stopping by a grocery store across the border can become a small adventure. The product selections are slightly different, and there are many treats to bring home, from distinctive crispbreads to sweet sodas. Did you know that the range of baking supplies is famously more extensive on the Swedish side than in Finland?
In the southern parts of the Tornio River Valley, the roads wind through rural village landscapes of fields and pastures. As you travel north, the trees grow smaller and the land rises gently into hills. Reindeer wander along the roadsides and the branches of the fir trees are decorated with nava lichen. In the northernmost reaches of the Original Lapland area, the scenery opens into wide horizons where steep fells shape the skyline and the eye can wander far.
A road trip in the Tornio River Valley can follow either chance or a plan. Where does your curiosity lead you? Would the theme be village culture – local museums, heritage sites or small art galleries? Or perhaps swimming spots and animal encounters chosen with children in mind? Maybe the guiding star is local food or the unique village events of the region.
