During summer 2025, each angler may catch a maximum of two salmon
In April 2025, Finland and Sweden once again held their annual negotiations on current fishing restrictions in the Tornio River. For the upcoming season, tighter regulations were agreed on catch quotas and fishing periods.
A new restriction has been introduced for this year: each angler is subject to a two-salmon catch limit, which applies to the entire fishing season and to all fishing methods on the Tornio River. After catching two salmon, salmon fishing must be stopped for the remainder of the season.
Salmon fishing is permitted between 9 June 2025 at 19:00 and 15 August 2025.
After this, salmon fishing is allowed until 25 August using lures equipped with barbless hooks, and all salmon over 65 cm in length must be released immediately. This new rule aims to safeguard the operating conditions of fishing tourism businesses, while also considering research findings that salmon tolerate handling better in late August than earlier in the summer.
Spin fly fishing is permitted from 9 June at 19:00 until 16 June at 23:59.
In addition, it was agreed that when fishing from a boat, no more than four rods may be used or kept in the boat at the same time. The use of gaffs with handles is prohibited. These restrictions support the populations of salmon, trout, and grayling.
Note! As of 1 January 2025, every salmon caught must be reported within 14 days of capture. The reporting obligation also applies to released fish. See the available reporting channels here.
The number of salmon migrating into the Tornio River is monitored by sonar at Kattilakoski. You can follow the migration numbers here.
The Tornio River is well known as a salmon fishing river. Its salmon fishing is regulated by the Frontier River Agreement and its fishing rules. In addition, Finland and Sweden negotiate annually to agree on more detailed rules suitable for the current situation.
