Our Lapland is also Your Lapland

“When you understand what Our Lapland is like, you won’t want to leave.” Our calendar is the Torne River. When does the ice break? Is it already flooding? Is the salmon coming? Is the river already frozen? Our clock is the sun. During the polar night the sun is barely rises, so why not stay in and take it easy. In summer there is light, night and day. So much time and so many nice things to do! Still, let’s take it easy. Have a seat, we’ll have a coffee and a chat.

Take a moment to feel the rhythm of light and nature.

          Come along!

The river runs hundreds of kilometres from the Torne Lake in northern Sweden to the far end of the Bay of Bothnia. The area of Original Lapland is vast and the distances may be long, however, the road network and connections cover the area well and getting from place to place is no problem.

Pello

The fishing capital of Finland and so much more!

Views worthy of a national park

The views around the Lake Miekojärvi are worthy of a national park. There are a number of nature preservation sights in the area. The municipalities of Pello and Ylitornio have had a preliminary report done on establishing a new national park in the Arctic Circle in western Lapland.

This area boasts for example: The Orhinselänniemi Sands, Pieskänjupukka views, Vaarasaari nature trail and the Arctic Circle.

In the Pello area there are also other valued nature sights such as Jaipaljukka, Kivipirtti cave, Kattilakoski rapids, Konttaköngäs, Eero’s trail and Everstin piilo observation trail.

It’s happening in Pello on land and water

In the summer Pello has many types of yearly events like the Poikkinaintiajot rally; Watercross race; Swim the Arctic international competition in Juoksengi, the Kojamonkisaus and Lohikuninkuus salmon fishing competitions; Agility-fäst and Samoilu (wondering) World Championships. Also, there are plenty of concerts and theatre performances.

Great places for organising events are: Rohkihalli, the ice hall, Kittisvaaran motor sports centre, Pellon Ponsi’s athletics field and Pyreväpuisto park.

Is culture your thing? – visit Oranki Art

This internationally known nature art exhibition can be found in the small village of Oranki, north of Pello.

Remember to visit these sights: in the centre the statue of Pello’s own skiing legend Eero Mäntyranta; Maupertuis memorial in Kittisvaara and Timo K. Mukka’s relief on the library wall.
