Ylitornio
Ylitornio has a lot to offer
The legendary Aavasaksa
The oldest tourist destination in Lapland, Aavasaksa rises above the Torne Valley in all its grandeur. Still today it attracts the locals and travellers to admire the midnight sun and marvel at the breath taking views from the top.
From the village of Aavasaksa it’s also easy to pop over to Sweden to Matarenki, that is, Övertorneå. Most people here speak the local language of meänkieli or Swedish.

Open fields and hills, lakes and rivers – side by side
The Ylitornio area has many large lakes such as Miekojärvi, Vietonen, Raanujärvi and Lohijärvi. These waters invite to adventures and relaxation whether you love swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing or hiking.
A white night’s canoe route meanders along small and big rivers from Kolari through Pello to Ylitornio, and via the River Tengeliö to the Torne River.
Delight in the fantastic views to the lakes from the nature trails of Sompanen, Ainiovaara, Mikko and Haukkavaara.
Logging and sundry culture
The Meltosjärvi Savottapiha introduces you to the old logging culture. The outdoor spaces are open to visit at any time. In the yard you can see a fine wooden work of art that is a tribute to the horses that were indispensable in the logging sites.
You can also visit the traditional style of houses in Ylitornio. Annikki Kariniemi, an author who wrote many books on Lapland, lived in Ylitornio and her statue is standing on top the Aavasaksa hill.
